Customers can manage held items inside Shopify customer accounts or on the configured storefront page. Account extensions need customer accounts; the storefront route also supports classic accounts on themes with app blocks. Test the selected surface while signed in with the purchase identity.
How a guest accesses their held orders
- The customer visits your Order Summary page. If they are not signed in, they see a login prompt (by default: "Log in to view your order history and track your shipments.").
- With Shopify customer accounts, sign in with the checkout email and its verification code; a profile can be created automatically. With classic accounts, follow the store’s registration/password flow instead.
- Once signed in, their held orders appear on the Order Summary page, just as they would for any registered customer.
- From there they can select orders, preview the shipping fee, and proceed to the shipping checkout.
Helping a guest find their order
If a guest contacts you saying they cannot find their held order, ask them to:
- Find the original order confirmation email and note the email address it was sent to.
- Go to your store and create a customer account (or sign in if they already have one) using that exact email.
- Open the Order Summary page and sign in when prompted.
After the account is created
Once the customer has a Shopify account with a matching email, everything works the same as for a registered shopper. They can select held orders, pay shipping, and ship them in one combined delivery. Future purchases with that account email will also appear automatically. For a full walkthrough of how that flow works, see How a customer asks to ship.
