What is Buy Now, Ship Later?

Think about buying a ticket for a concert. You pay today, so your seat is safe. But you don't go to the concert until later.

Buy Now, Ship Later works the same way:

  1. The customer buys today. They pay, and the deal price is locked in.
  2. The order waits safely. Nothing gets shipped yet.
  3. More orders can join. If they buy again, the new items go in the same box.
  4. It ships when they're ready. One box, one delivery, one shipping fee.

The customer gets the deal. You get the sale. And nobody has to rush.

Why BFCM shipping is so tricky

On Black Friday, almost every shop in the country wants to post parcels in the same few days. That causes three big problems:

  • Couriers get very busy. Parcels can arrive late.
  • Prices can go up. Many couriers add extra "peak season" fees in the busy months.
  • Your team gets swamped. Packing hundreds of boxes in one week is hard work.

Shopify's checklist even tells shops to make a backup plan for shipping delays. Buy Now, Ship Later is a plan that stops the pile-up from happening in the first place.

1. Customers lock in the deal with no stress

Shoppers hate surprises at checkout. The number one reason people leave without buying is extra costs they didn't expect, like shipping. Shopify's checklist says 39% of shoppers who left an order did it for this reason.

With Buy Now, Ship Later, shoppers don't have to pay a new shipping fee every time they buy. They can grab a Black Friday deal, then a Cyber Monday deal, and still pay for just one box. That makes saying "yes" much easier.

2. You get the sale right away

When a customer pays, the money is yours and the item is theirs. The sale is safe, even if the box doesn't leave for a while.

That means you don't lose customers who think, "I'll wait and buy it all at once later." Later often turns into never. Ship later turns it into now.

3. Spread your shipping out

Instead of one crazy week of packing, orders can go out over calmer weeks.

This fits right in with Shopify's advice to plan for a longer sales season, not just one weekend. Your team packs at a steady pace. You make fewer mistakes. You may not even need extra helpers.

4. Dodge peak courier fees and save money

When parcels don't all ship in the busiest week, you can post them when things are quieter and courier prices are calmer.

There's a second saving, too. Three orders in one box means you pay for one label, one box and one lot of packing tape, not three. Customers save on shipping, and so do you.

5. Better for the planet

Fewer boxes means less cardboard, less plastic and less tape. Fewer parcels also means fewer van trips on the road.

It's a small change for each order. Across a whole holiday season, it adds up to a lot less waste.

Bonus: happy shoppers come back

Ship later doesn't just help on Black Friday. It helps all year.

At Addora, we see that customers who use ship later come back to buy again more than five times as often as those who don't. They also spend two to three times as much. About half of shoppers who try it once keep using it.

Your ship-later BFCM checklist

Use this list next to Shopify's 25-step BFCM checklist:

  • Turn it on early. Install Addora and switch on Buy Now, Ship Later before November. There's a free plan to start.
  • Explain it clearly. Add a short line on product pages and your FAQ page, like "Buy now, ship later: we'll hold your order and ship it all in one box."
  • Tell your email list. Shopify suggests sending teaser emails early. Mention ship later in them.
  • Plan your packing days. Pick quieter days after the rush to send out held orders.
  • Check your results. After BFCM, look at how many orders went into each box. The more orders per box, the more you saved.

Buy Now, Ship Later FAQ

Is ship later the same as a pre-order? No. A pre-order is for items that aren't in stock yet. With ship later, the item is ready. The customer just chooses to wait so they can add more to the box.

Is it the same as buy now, pay later? No. Buy now, pay later splits up the payment. Buy Now, Ship Later holds the shipping. The customer pays in full, and the box ships later.

Do customers pay for shipping more than once? No. All their held orders go in one box, so they pay shipping one time.

When should I set it up? The sooner the better. Shopify recommends starting BFCM prep in early autumn, so now is a great time.

Get ready now, relax later

Black Friday Cyber Monday doesn't have to mean a mountain of boxes and a big shipping bill. With Buy Now, Ship Later, your customers lock in their deals, you lock in your sales, and the shipping happens on a calmer day, in fewer boxes.
